Selling Skills Body Language - Handshaking

In selling, Handshake plays a major role. It reflects your feeling, your character, your personality and your confidence. The body language of handshake transmits your internal feelings, it conveys confidence, warmth, honesty, commitment, loyalty and at the same time it conveys your weakness, uncertainity, disinterest, dishonesty etc. Use the right handshaking bodylanguage to give good impressions to your prospects and customers.

  • Avoid the Strong Grip: This type of handshake is aggresive and shows your feeling of pulling the prospect forcefully and imposing your view point.
  • Avoid the Wimpy Grip: the handshake should be firm and gentle. It reflects warmth and concern. A friendly handshake wins the game.
  • Do not initiate: While shaking hands with elders and females, do not take the initiative. It is their priviledge only. They may or may not be interested to shake hands with you. Do not try to give any such negative impression. Let them decide whether they want to entertain you with the hand shakes. So keep it in mind, do not take the initiative to shake hands with ladies and old age people.
  • If you are a female: If you are a female and wants to shake hand with a male, do it properly with a soft but full grip. Giving only few fingers in others hand show you are least interested in meeting.
  • With a smile: Your handshake should be accompanied by a genuine smile. It will make the environment pleasing and good.
